Nottingham Prognostic Index (NPI)
Estimates operable invasive breast-cancer prognosis from surgical pathology: tumour size, axillary nodes and histological grade.

Method · Limits of application
NPI/Haybittle 1982/Galea 1992: 0.2 size cm+nodal stage 1–3+grade 1–3
NPI relates pathological features of primary breast cancer to prognosis. The total requires correctly defined nodal stage and grade; it does not determine current treatment or guarantee individual survival. The formula, groups and rates must match the edition and population used.
Conditions of use
Check the population, units, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and version in the original source. A result alone does not establish a diagnosis, discharge decision or prescription.
Documented parameters
- Largest invasive tumor diameter (pathology) · cm
- Axillary lymph nodes
- Histological grade (Nottingham/Elston-Ellis)
5/5 reference cases checked. Numerical tests are not clinical validation.
Relationship with cancer research
Specific oncological application
A prognostic index for operable breast cancer. Its historical purpose and population must be checked against the sources before use.
Applications: Survival and quality of life
