Tobin index (rapid shallow breathing index)
Ratio of respiratory rate to tidal volume in litres during spontaneous breathing; high values indicate rapid shallow breathing associated with weaning failure.

RSBI/Yang–Tobin 1991: f/VT, VT in litres; do not confuse with VT in mL
RSBI was studied as a predictor of the outcome of ventilator-weaning attempts. The result depends on measurement conditions and technique and does not alone confirm airway-protection ability or extubation safety. A favorable index does not guarantee success.
Conditions of use
Check the population, units, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and version in the original source. A result alone does not establish a diagnosis, discharge decision or prescription.
